Our library landscape. Your employer.

Libraries in Germany have a long history that began in the Middle Ages with monastery libraries. Today there are over 8,850 libraries in the country, which couldn't be more different in size and type. These range from public libraries to university and school libraries to prison libraries and include diverse collections from printed books to digital media, works of art and musical instruments.

Libraries are of central importance for the preparation and transfer of knowledge, the promotion of education and lifelong learning and as cultural centers. They stand for diversity, democracy and sustainability.

Library staff play a central role in the success of libraries. Library staff are not only guardians of knowledge, but also educational facilitators and catalysts. They support users in researching and obtaining information, promote media literacy and help preserve and strengthen the value and important role of libraries in today's society.

Voices from the library world

My work is not a job, but a calling. Above all, I love helping people at the service desk, the heart of the library. The magic is in the details: for example, feeling the grateful smile of a user when I find a book I want and haven't yet discovered on the shelf. Since a book can undoubtedly save lives, I often see myself as a kind of treasure keeper.

Jairo Compostela Paramio – Bibliotheksmitarbeiter (FaMI), Hochschul- und Kreisbibliothek Bonn-Rhein-Sieg

In my One Person Library I am responsible for all aspects of library work. This includes the selection and procurement of books and other media, the cataloging of the holdings, the organization of events, the support of users, the provision of research and information services, the maintenance of the homepage, the publication list and the management of the budget. It means being solely responsible for the smooth operation of the library. You need organizational skills, communication skills, knowledge of library and information science, and technical know-how in dealing with library systems and digital resources. Despite the daily challenges, the work is interesting and varied because you have direct contact with users and have a major influence on the offerings and services of your own library. It requires initiative, flexibility and resilience in order to meet the diverse requirements. For me a calling.

Ina Stauffer – librarian, information center / library at Leibniz University of Applied Sciences

Public libraries are so much more than just lending stations: they are innovative, unpredictable, diverse, colorful and stimulating. There is an incredible amount to discover and try out here, and the sparkling eyes of the users confirm our understanding of libraries every day.

Uta Silderhuis – Library Manager, Lauenburg City Library in Schleswig-Holstein – Library of the Year 2023 in small municipalities and regions

I love dealing with a wide variety of people every day – from babies to seniors – and offering the right media and events for everyone.

Regina Herbst – Library Manager, Straubing City Library

I love my job because it is diverse: from setting up shelves to reading events and from newborns to seniors, everything is involved. There's nothing like seeing your eyes light up when you've just found your new favorite book!

Stefan Beer – Branch Manager, Regensburg City Library

I enjoy working with other people. The library is the ideal place to work. Always something going on.

Dr. Arne Upmeier – Senior Library Director, KIT Library (KIT – Karlsruhe Institute of Technology)

People experience stories, become them
Books come to people who go to libraries - and can experience so much more than books! I can't imagine a more exciting and varied job!

Roswitha Früh-Kunz – Dipl.-Bibl., library manager, library at the Waschenbeuren town hall

Whether reading stories, gaming events or escape rooms: the FaMI job is very varied and offers many opportunities to implement your own ideas.

Karina Bothe – employee of the Lesum district library of the Bremen City Library

As FaMI you are the link between the library's holdings and the users.

Lara Senst – FaMI trainee in the 2nd year of training, University Library of the Free University of Berlin

In fact, my enthusiasm for the profession has steadily grown over the years. That makes me very happy.

Dr. Sophia Manns-Süßbrich – Specialist for English, American and Slavic Studies, Department of Advanced Training, Volunteer Training, Leipzig University Library

From my more than 40 years of experience, I can say that it is a versatile job with a forward-looking perspective that allows you to always learn and implement something new, whether it concerns the areas of use or behind them Scenes in various administrative departments

Diana Riffel – librarian in the KIT library (KIT – Karlsruhe Institute of Technology)

The tasks in an academic library are diverse and varied. It fills me with joy every day to be able to support researchers in science and teaching on the one hand, and students with their studies on the other. For me, working in a university library is a good opportunity to provide support in a scientific environment. A beautiful and important task!

Dr. Stefan H. Eberhard – biologist, specialist speaker and head of the Information Competence Working Group, Rostock University Library

I love my work because I can get involved in different projects and my multilingualism is valued.

Ado Diallo – employee of the service team at the Bremen City Library

Janet Wagner – librarian, trainer, trainer for education for sustainable development, communication & sustainability at the University Library of the Free University of Berlin
